perhaps its a beacon for off world people (like us) to cause us to point a radio telescope at it.

I haven't heard anything about whether or not it could be a dead star, brown dwarf, or similar.... in a binary configuration. I assume that if this could be the case there would be a pronounced wobble in the stars rotation.
