Executive producer Michael Mann prohibited the use of "earth tones" during production. Bobby Roth, a director on Miami Vice, recalled:
"There are certain colors you're not allowed to use, like red or brown. For example, if the script calls for 'a Mercedes pulling up,' the car department will show you three or four options—one in white, one in black, and another in silver. But you won’t see a red or brown one. Michael has a precise vision for how things should appear on camera."
Miami Vice was also one of the first American network TV shows to be broadcast in stereophonic sound, with all episodes mixed in 4-channel stereo throughout its run.
