We rescued one from death row at the pound. He had been returned six times and was about year old. We have other large dogs and rescues and my wife talked me into saving him. After several days of good behavior he felt more comfortable. I had my hand down around his food or something and he growled at me, I know it’s kind of drastic but it was my immediate reaction that before he was finished growling he found himself spinning over in the air and I held him down on his back and said don’t ever growl at me again. He was a great dog after that, just alpha problem. He got to be 14 but blew his knees out at 11 or 12. Got the surgeries but took the run out of him.

We've actively discouraged biting and nipping in our Doberman puppy. She's about 9 months old now and if she puts her mouth on our arm or leg we say "why is my arm in your mouth?" And she'll stop. I learned a couple months ago how sharp their teeth are when her new adult tooth scraped up my shin and sent me to the hospital for stitches (not her fault. We were playing fetch, i had a long dress on and she couldn't see where my legs were).

She does get a little pushy when it comes to attention. Mostly when she wants to play. She'll shove the toy and her nose into your stomach or back. She's only tried randomly climbing in my lap once.

All good points John. We have 3 male dobies. A 3 year old.. just neutered last week and two 10 month old males un-neutered.
It has been a learning curve.

only issue i had with my girl is right before she died when she snapped at a kitten. She didn't hurt him, but momma cat wasn't happy with her. To be fair, my girl who loved cats and kittens, had a painful tumor and the kitten pounced on it.

My girl just turned 8 months old and I feel like we’re just not coming out of the biting/nipping puppy phase! I’m so relieved 😂 some days it felt like it’s last forever

75% of female intact dobes will go thru a false pregnancy. My female is experiencing it now. She carries a ball where ever she goes. You have to remove it from her mouth so she will eat. She is not producing milk...thank goodness! My first dobe breeder who I keep in contact with said there is no reason for concern and it will pass in due time. A few weeks or the time it takes for a pregnancy. She said don't take her "baby" away. It will just make he find other substitution and cause her to be frantic. Which is why I contacted her after taking ball away. She was fine the night before and woke up like that. So not all ball obsessions are call for alarm. Since you haven't had a female thought you'd like to know this.🥰

Thankyou for the information on certain problems with a Doberman, i have 2 males one is 3 years old and the other one is 1 year old !! From personal experience most of the traits of Dobermans / problems with the breed i have ironed out with constant training and stimulation, you're right Dobermans are very intelligent however they enjoy the connection with not only with owners, but with the environment and consistency!! I mean buy this setting certain parameters will undoubtedly increase confidence in both you and your dog. Alot of negative traits are not the breed but the lack of constant commitment to the breed, i am often asked are they a high maintenance dog and yes they are not just with health issues / nutritional requirements but also the ongoing inter action between you and your dog

Hi John, me again. I got my girl Lucy at roughly a year and a half and she came with no discipline. She's great now after a year and half of my own work. I still have scars on my arms and legs when she bit me. The most effective response to the bites, after months of frustration was to bite her back on her ears and around her neck, just like a parent dog does to correct young pups. It still works like a charm. Soft pressure and a growl and she realizes I'm the alpha. I know you've debated the alpha term, but with strong working breeds and especially our dobermans, it is the rule they must understand. Lucy is great with everyone we meet who likes dogs. Those that don't still give us a wide berth. Fair enough but wow, she is just an amazing dog. Just like every doberman owner knows. Cheers and keep up the great work.

I have one now that uses his front paws like hands, it is kind of funny to watch. He is able to open cabinets and the refrigerator to the point that we had to put baby locks on everything to correct it.
