WIKITONGUES: Golala speaking Sorani Kurdish

This video was recorded by Irena Dahl in Oslo, Norway, where she and Golala live. Sorani Kurdish, known natively as Soranî (سۆرانی) and by researchers as Central Kurdish, is spoken by as many as seven million people, primarily in Iraqi Kurdistan, where it is an official language alongside Standard Arabic, as well as in Kurdish Iran. An Indo-European language of the Iranian family, it is perhaps most closely related to Farsi, and more distantly to languages as diverse as Hindi and English. Though Kurdish has been used in literature since at least the 16th century CE, it wasn’t until the 1990s that the language featured prominently in mass media, thanks to the autonomy of Iraqi Kurdistan. Consequently, Soranî has been the primary Kurdish variety in film, television, and radio. It is also used online, with the .krd top-level domain for Kurdish websites.

This is Sorani Kurdish (also called Central Kurdish). Translation: My name is Golala, I came here from Eastern Kurdistan. In Iran, education in Kurdish is forbidden, i.e. we have no reading in Kurdish. Everything is in Persian. People learn Kurdish at home, maybe if they have elders that can teach them. Everybody in Iran learns Kurdish this way: at home by themselves. Myself, I have had and still have a lot of Kurdish writings, books and articles on different subjects. In this part of Kurdistan (Eastern), people take initiative on their own to learn Kurdish. However, in Southern Kurdistan, where they're having an independence referendum, education has been held in Kurdish for a long time. All types of Kurdish reading is available there, from beginner level to advanced. There are many high-level articles existent. This has helped a lot in making Kurdish identity and culture flourish in the region, which in turn has had its effect on Eastern Kurdistan. The works and articles of Southern Kurdistan have been spread in Eastern Kurdistan, and this has made awareness of reading and writing to become prevalent in the atmosphere. It has heightened the status of writing and text, so you can say that written literature has a lot of impact in shaping a nation.

what dada Golala says is all right, and totally agree with her. and Kurdish language is very nice and interesting language if you have good knowledge in Kurdish. I have few English friends where they been living in Kurdish for over 10 years speak fluent Kurdish including reading and writing in very advanced level and i am impressed by their skills.

Kurdish is the language of the Neolithic Age. Many agricultural and cereal products and animal names are in the Kurdish language.

Interesting to see how many Persian words have survived in modern Sorani Kurdish.
