What is Inside A Car's Muffler and Catalytic Converter? Why do people delete a muffler? What about a muffler vs a straight pipe? Oh and no, it's not a muffler bearing. Mufflers reduce the amount of sound out of an engine, then also slow the exhaust gas down as it travels to the back of the car. You will also see why a performance exhaust sounds different from a stock muffler.

My 94 A3 had 200k miles and the original SS stock exhaust. It looked good as new after 10 years when I sold it. No leaks whatsoever and always passed emissions.
I really miss my old Golf as it never once let me down or stranded.

This was a big help as we had no idea what was inside the tail pipe of our car and thought it was an animal that crawled in such as a skunk. That fiberglass certainly does resemble skunk hair😂. Thanks so much for educating me. I’ll be sore to watch more of your car tips 😊

Interesting timing. I'm back from my trip and while being there, my exhaust system broke just after the converter. I was worried if such drive will damage it (since it's a can with rarities), but turns out previous owners emptied it already and welded down few years back hahaha
P.S. "straight piped" diesel sounds good enough to forgive it the fact the turbo was often in emergency mode because of the lambda sensor error

I just bought a 2010 Ford Transit Connect so I can convert it into a weekend camper. On Friday I saw "hair" coming out my tailpipe!!! I was so shocked and terrified, I didn't know what to think! I still don't know EXACTLY what is wrong but I have a theory considering how loud it is, even in idle and how much gas i run through... I think I need a new muffler or catalytic converter, or both! I'm bringing it to a shop ASAP. Thank you for your video though, very educational! I wish I had known this ahead of time when the dealership promised me the muffler was new.

I had an Audi 2.0tfsi Quattro which had a back box half the size of that and it sounded louder generally and had a drone around 2500-2800 rpm Haha very interesting thanks Charles!

It looks like the whole systems is actually straight through, very interesting. That pipe going off into the side chamber of the second muffler looks like something akin to a Helmholtz resonator, not actually what would by typically called a baffled muffler.
