I remember my first time calling cardiology as a med student. The resident totally threw me under the bus and I had no idea why I was calling the cardiologist. After about 2 or 3 questions where I responded "I don't know" I could hear the cardiologist getting annoyed. There was a long pause. He said "wait, are you a med student?" I said yes. He took a deep breath and said "ok nevermind. Thanks for the consult" and hung up. I think I almost passed out

I went to the ER for chest pain and shortness of breath once. After sitting in the waiting room with pain and labored breathing for over an hour, I was finally brought into an ER room. This young woman who was clearly a med student comes over and asks me some questions before scurrying off. Then she returns with a young man in a short white coat who I figured was the first year resident. She gives him report, he asks me some questions and they both scurry off again. They both return with a young man who was a few years older and I figured was the chief resident. The first year gives report to him, he asks me some more questions and then all 3 of them scurry off. A few minutes go by and the trio returns with a woman in her 40's who was clearly the attending. The chief resident gives her report, she asks him some questions, asks me some questions and decided to admit me and send me for testing. It was quite comical except for the part where I was having probably 8/10 substernal chest pain that was radiating into my left arm and neck. I wasn't an EMT at the time but I knew those were bad signs. Thankfully everything with the ticker was fine, cardiac enzyme tests were negative, stress tests were negative and everything is still working strong 10+ years later.

Today I witnessed a trauma surgeon call cardiology for a consult. He told them that the patient had pain in her left arm and chest as well as abdomen and that he hadn't even LOOKED at the EKG and that he hadn't checked Trop T. When cardiology asked him to assess the EKG before callong them he told that 'I could tell you that there are five lines on it, maybe six, I'm not a cardiologist.' He then turned mad at the poor chap for not telling him sooner that HIS patient had had an MI before even though he had accesa to the all files via his PC. That same day he also went off on a poor young general surgeon for not correctly identifying a torn tendon telling her 'You DID study medicine, right???'

I love how as a student, your hair and scrubs and coat are all nice and presentable but then as a resident, you're looking all disheveled 🤣🤣🤣

Damn Mr. Jones is back in the hospital again? That’s sad I thought he’d just been discharged a few days ago. Guy can’t catch a break

I’m so happy I left med school. It is *not* what people think it’s like.

Perks of doing the medicine rotation towards the end of the year is that hopefully you've done an elective or two beforehand in a subspecialty like neuro, nephro, or cardiology so you have notes on how to present to them when on medicine, because that's all you really have to do. Otherwise, calling a consult is understandably a very scary experience because you have NO idea what you're doing and you don't know if the consulting physician knows that too lol.

This is why I told everyone I was going into pathology so the other student always had to do the consults

Omg .... No one . No one prepared me for the CONSTANT HURRIED STATE that new doctors have to be in to appease their seniors ...

Most of the time you just get the answering service, and you just tell them the patient’s name, the doctor’s name, and the reason for the consult. Takes like two minutes 😂

Not gonna lie you can probably draw, run, chart the 12 ABG in 30mins, 20mins if they have an a-line.

In my country there's conscription. So the military doctors would let the medical interns diagnose the ppl who probably have diseases whether they cqn join the military or not.

It was pretty fun talking to them, cuz they were my age.
