Umm Actually Earth is also *not* destroyed because it's in a plural zone and alternate Earths take its place. Also in "So Long, and Thanks For All the Fish" an Alternate Earth is brought in by the Dolphins in an effort to preserve humanity.

Um actually, earth was destroyed for an Hyperspace bypass, paralleling the opening in which the main character's house was going to be demolished for a motorway bypass.

Um, actually, “clerical error” isn’t *quite* right, you see, the document about building the space bypass was posted at the local offices in Alpha Centauri, but humans had neglected to visit the office to dispute the building of the bypass in time, despite the fact that humans had unfortunately no damn clue an entire intergalactic civilization existed to begin with. Tragic 😔
