to be clear, the issue isnt icebergs melting themselves, its glaciers and ice sheets melting and breaking off, adding _new_ water to the ocean, the way putting an ice cube in water raises the water level.

An often-overlooked ingredient makes a significant difference: saltiness. Various studies show that because floating ice is made of fresh water, it actually increases sea level slightly when it melts into the salty sea – unlike what happens in your water glass.

Well that’s true but the planet isn’t a good analogy for that because when I’ve melts on the planets surface it DOES raise the sea level, because ice water accumulation on land builds up

Can someone explain the pipe breaking part?

"common misconception that sea level change comes only from ice attached to land, and not from floating sea ice. Although that is mostly true, it turns out that there is an effect, even if it is minor.

A floating object, like an iceberg or other sea ice, displaces its own weight in water. But fresh water is less dense than salt water. So, when floating ice melts and becomes liquid, it takes up more volume than the seawater it displaced when it was ice, raising sea level. This has about 3% the effect of grounded ice-melt and raises sea level." - Nasa. IS NEIL DEGRASSE WRONG?

Lets say that u put a iceberg in a swimmingpool. 10% stay above waterline 90% under the waterline. U put a line with a marker on the swimmingpool tiles where the waterline is. U wait for the ice to melt. Will the waterline go up or stay at the same lvl. It will stay at the same lvl because of displacement of the iceberg. Water when frozen expands so when it melt the iceberg will get smaller and smaller but the melted water will cover less area then when frozen. So only when the ice on the mountains will melt we will experience water raising. Ice on water will not contribute to water lvl go up.

Does it matter if it's salt water?

Okay so why would the icebergs melting cause the Statue of Liberty to go underwater?

but this doesn’t take into account, all of the ice melting off all of the mountains and running off into the ocean. sea level will rise

You forget about all the ice outside the water that melts.... alot ice in Antarctica is on land

You do understand that when glaciers melt it does raise water level right?

What if the iceberg calves from a land based ice sheet. Duh
