It uses vision positioning from the cameras if you don't have GPS indoors, works even if signal is lost. Will try it's best to maintain it's hover location

I just have the mini 3 and am blown away with how well it handles indoors, you can turn a ceiling fan on high and it will stay locked with perfect picture less than a foot beneath it in heavy wind. Crazy cool.

It's called VPS (Visual positioning system) and it's there in most of drones including those without GPS

You need to change that to RTH my man…If the controller battery goes down or if you fly too far. The drone will find its way to the home point

After all, drones have optical chips, this system is called VPS, visual positioning system.
Being low above the ground or in rooms where they lose the GPS signal, they position themselves using VPS.
Even a baby like Tello, which does not have GPS but has VPS, can maintain its position incredibly accurately on its own.
The connection with the controller is only so that we can control it.

Downward optical flow sensors keep it stable even with GPS it still uses them below a certain height and for landing. 👍

Inertial Navigation System or INS
It detects the movement from its many gyroscopes and accelerometers and corrects any movement by adding the same ammount of movement it undertook when you pushed it, submarines use it to navigate underwater when they can't use their GNSS

It users sensors front, rear and underneath with it's front camera. It creates a log of it's position using all sensors data.

Likely it pulled the distance from the controller also.

Those cameras are optical flow sensors. It looks at landmarks in the room and can see if it's moved in relation to them

Computer vision and probably an xy-plane to compute origin (direction & distance). I’m definitely adding Drone algorithm to my future projects.

It's called an optical flow sensor and it's basically the same method the computer mouse uses to know how it moves above any surface ( with a low resolution camera)
Just try to put a hand underneath the drone and see what happens

Cameras and accelerometers combined are actually incredibly accurate. Accelerometers alone are already so accurate that they can tell wether or not two smartphones are on the same bus without GPS. Our smartphones collect these informations together with cell tower info the exactly determain were we are, even if our smartphones had been shut down before and put into a metal box to block any connection. Only 1 smartphone must be outside of a box to expose every other because the accelerometer data is stored and uploaded once you connect to the internet the next time. The only way to protect yourself from this is having your smartphone float in water in that metal box to mess up the accelorometer data enough or leave your smartphone in a metal box in a completely different vehicle (putting it in a trailer is not sufficient to mess the data up enough). Once again - these sensors are incredibly accurate.

You could also remove the sensor module from your phone alongside its microphone and cameras! Just keep in mind that auto-rotating screens and stuff will obviously stop working. You could also install a custom ROM onto your phone that doesnt collect this data in the first place. But there arent custom ROMs or at least good custom ROMs for every phone. Its a very neiche feature.

So basically speaking - we are all being spyed on and that is a huge problem even if you believe that you had "nothing to hide".

Mini 2 se has the same feature. Take off the phone, switch off the remote., whatever, it'll still ' hang around', hehe.😊
