It’s sad how the mom left her with her abusive maternal grandfather. She didn’t have her mother there to protect her, and I think the mother wanted to take her daughter and escape, but she knew it was too risky to do so. In the scene where her mother left, Jo-Ann wanted to to go with Marie, but Marie wouldn’t let her because it was too dangerous. So she was left with her cruel maternal grandfather. It’s sad. Her mother was gone, and the only relative she had left was her abusive maternal grandfather. She was all alone. Completely alone. But there were these two scenes where the grandpa actually smiled and showed kindness and affection towards Jo-Ann. It didn’t last for long, though.

Yes I think that Joann's mom did try to be a decent mother to her, but it just didn't happen. Sometimes life just doesn't go the way we wanted it to.😢

The mother isn't racist she doesn't mean to be that way it's the way she was raised it's where they are in the world and the time of the world that they're in she don't mean nothing by it please don't judge the character until you see the show she's actually a very loving mother she just is trapped by this evil bastard that she's married to
