While in Kenya, I got to meet coach Bernard Ouma, who oversees the training of Cheruiyot and the Rongai Athletics Club. I wanted to chat to Ouma about the evolution of the 1500m, takeaways from the fast race in Oslo, and all the recent chatter about Hicham El Guerrouj’s 3:26.00 world record from 1997.

Coach Bernard talking about the context of holistically looking at Timothy’s performance at World’s last year in the context of his social, family life, and physiological factors and NOT JUST TRAINING or NOT JUST THE RESULT is something a lot more people gotta take stock into

Intelligent coach yes, but to cling at the "he beat Jakob 12 times" is really clutching at straws as Jakob was nowhere the athlete he is now. Post-Tokyo, Jakob has beaten Cherry Pie every time. One clever thing he does say is that the world record is clouded in suspicion. Asbel Kiprop's time should also be struck from the list as he was done for doping afterwards. El Guerrouj, well all i will say is that doping and testing is much more stringent at major champshionships. And hey, what a surprise, El Guerrouj often struggled at Worlds and Olympics. Moroccan athletes back in the day loved EPO for breakfast
