I am one of those forest service employees that were laid off. The southern region timber strike team provided about 25% of the productivity for the entire forest service last year. So to suddenly be fired for imaginary poor performance while in the middle of a work assignment was an insult

This legit sounds like an add you'd hear on a billboard in Cyberpunk 2077

You hear that? That's the sound of Teddy Roosevelt either spinning in his grave so fast it could solve the energy crisis if you hooked up a generator to it, or it's him digging himself out because there's a list of unkicked arses with his boot's name on them

Cost to run parks: about 2 billion
Revenue made from parks: about 35 billion

"Yup, this is clearly an inefficient use of government funding."

My best friend is a park ranger and geologist for Yosemite so here are some things that arent well known to the public. A good number of those 4400 people are not only jobless, but are also homeless as a requirement to live in park housing is to employed by the national park service. Employees were fired under "poor performance" by the gov, which is illegal if the employee has no record of poor performance. (They are fighting this! Whoo!) Not only does fire prevention need help but so does search and rescue, which some parks are taking volunteers to help with. A lot of people are fighting this so hopefully we can turn this mess around.

My dad is a retired Forest Service employee. He worked for the Forest Service for like 36 years, and was a full believer behind the principles of Gifford Pinchot, the man who solidified what the modern Forest Service is today. To layoff that many employees to manage land is absolutely fucking insane. There’s so many more factors that go into the park and forest services that go beyond just rangers at the parks and forests, like lawyers and surveyors and policy writers. I am so fucking terrified.

I’m a forestry major. Just got into the program my third year this year. There was an urgent meeting for the school of forestry on this matter. I may have to face changing my major. I can’t fucking believe this.
Update:
Wow, I’m very surprised by how many people care about the forests and national parks, it’s amazing. Thanks for all the advice and love, I’ve decided to pursue a biology degree with emphasis on environmental conservation and wildlife studies. I don’t want to steer away from my passions. Maybe if this whole mess gets cleaned up in so many years I’ll be able to join the forest service down the line. I’m unable to travel and study abroad at this time due to the ban on financial aid coming into pursuit as well. For now I’m going to continue studying conservation, even if I am unable to get a forestry degree, I’m confident now with how many people there are who care that this will not be a permanent ordeal. I’m worried for the forests, wildlife, the fire seasons, national parks, everything. I’ll try my best with what is in my power, I hope many more people do the same thing 🩷

Isn't one of our biggest songs about how this country is beautiful and worth preserving? God damn...

You know. If there was something I always had a problem with. It's how much breathable air we have. There's just not enough toxic fumes and poison gas floating around on a daily basis. I'm so glad somebody is finally doing something about all of those stupid air cleaning, sunlight obstructing, highway preventing, profit blocking forests.

I'm British, i went to see Yellowstone many years ago and i was staggered by the natural beauty of the place and impressed by the pride people in the park services took in thier work

I must be extremely confused about the meaning of "conserve" because these conservatives seem dead-set on not leaving a single thing behind

You know what, I think my therapist is wrong. People do just wake up and ask themselves "how can I cause the most harm today?"

Ironically for a bunch of guys talking about wasteful spending, the National Park Service is one of the most profitable government agencies.
