As a player, Chris Sutton was Alan Shearer's strike partner at Blackburn when they won the Premiership in 1995. He snubbed an England B call up and flopped at Chelsea after that though, only finding solace in being a flat track bully in Scotland with Celtic. As a pundit, he's an annoying whinging git, as you've just discovered.

As a West Ham season ticket holder who was at the Arsenal game, who also stayed till the end, I completely understand the ones who left.

I left 5 minutes before half time to get some food, I heard about the 3rd goal as I was ordering a pie, and the 4th as I was paying for the same pie. When I got back to my seat, my row was completely empty.

But I have no issue with them leaving, why stay and watch that shit? The only joy I had the whole game was in the 80 something minute as we celebrated getting a corner, which was immediately crossed straight to their goalkeeper. I stayed partly for the novelty, partly to see how much more empty it would get, and partly cos the trains weren’t even running and I had to fucking drive half way there and knew it would take ages getting home, probably another reason why so many people left

At no point did I think the ones that were leaving were less fans then me, or I was a more of a fan for staying. Anyone who judges someone’s “fandom” for leaving a game where their team was playing shit and is 4-0 at half time is delusional. More delusional than the guy who was a couple rows behind me who genuinely still thought we had a chance at 5-0.

Also, the score line wasn’t even the thing that annoyed me most, it was Declan Rice scoring

The most Annoying argument is the Argument that never ends because the Argument that never ends is the most annoying argument that never ends.

I'm a Yeovil fan, I've been going since I was 5 (now 21). I've seen us lose a lot of matches, but I've never left a match early for two reasons. 1) No matter how badly we've played, I always want to show some level of appreciation to the players and 2) something genuinely memorable could happen, even if it was for the other team. If I had been at the game where Ibra scored that ridiculous overhead kick against England, I'd have been gutted that I hadn't seen it because I'd left early, even though it was against my team. To be clear, I understand completely why others would leave matches early, and I probably have a slightly different mentality supporting a lower league team. Sometimes it's not just about the team you came to watch, but also about the actual football that you get to see.

One thing to bear in mind that it's an absolute nightmare getting out of West Ham's stadium. You have to wait minimum an hour to get on any form of transport as they stagger people leaving the area. So leaving early, especially when your team are getting battered, isn't a bad idea.

Also on Radio 5 live they tend to make controversial takes to get more people to call in after the game.

Leaving early doesn't make anyone less of a fan. I just feel that it's better to support the team in the bad moments to appreciate and savour the good moments. As a Sheffield United fan watching all of the 8-0 loss to Newcastle, 5-0 to Burnley etc makes the 3 wins we have oh so sweet (and that Derby's record is safe for another team to take).

Gatekeeping sports fandom is literally the dumbest and least important thing I could ever think of doing

Honestly I agree I only ever walked out of 1 game and that was when we lost 7 nill after losing to Kidderminster in the cup, you stay to show respect to the team for their usual performance. But its probably different at a smaller club

First of all, great video!

Here in Brazil this culture of "you are not a real fan" is really big... The main argument is that is like a marriage: "for better, for worse" kinda thing... I think that Sutton was (poorly) trying to say that: "you souldn't give up in these moments, because, if so, you're not worthy celebrating when things get better, yadda yadda"

While I do think this is stupid, I also think that there are some things that a fan should not do, like straight betting against his team, or doing something that in a major way supports a rival (being a club member, for example) (I seen these kinds of things happen before, that's why i'm mentioning those specifically)

I think at end of the day, no one should judge others how the support their team. Everyone have their own way. I understand his point.

As a NY Jets fan I can confirm leaving games at halftime is a common practice 😂

Spare a thought for Harrogate Town who lost 9-2 away from home to Mansfield Town yesterday.

In a nutshell 'Chris Sutton' was Alan Shearer's strike partner when he was at Blackburn when Rovers won the EPL in the 94-95 season.

The point is you’re a unit and the boys need to hear your support when they’re feeling down

i agree with most of what u said but you can’t deny that the “IS THERE A FIRE DRILL?” chant is absolutely fucking hilarious

I think the question is about the crowd's role at a match. Are they there to be entertained or are they there to support the team? And that mean support them, even when they are playing poorly.
I once sat through a game where my team was 7-0 down at home and the ground was nearly empty but those that stayed kept chanting and my team scored once in the last minute and the celebrations were a lot of fun.

Keep the green background for Zealandism. It is a great visual to let viewers know which love your channels they're watching, if they didn't see it before they clicked.
