The U.S. government is firing back at Russia for its interference in this year's U.S. presidential election.
Under the slew of measures,...dozens of Russian diplomats in Washington, Maryland and San Francisco have been given 72 hours to leave the United States.
Park Jong-hong reports.
The Russian diplomats were declared "persona non grata" and ordered to leave the U.S. within a matter of days.
In a written statement, President Barack Obama ordered the expulsion of 35 diplomats and sanctioned intelligence officials who allegedly hacked U.S. political groups in the November presidential election.
In addition, two Russian compounds in New York and Maryland will be shut down.
Obama said the action against Russia follows repeated private and public warnings to the Russian government.
He added it's necessary to counter efforts to harm U.S. interests in violation of international norms.
He said the White House will report to Congress "in the coming days" about Russian attempts to interfere in the election, as well as previous election cycles.
Responding to the move,.. the Kremlin described the sanctions as unlawful, and said they would destroy Washington's diplomatic relations with Russia.
The retaliatory measures mark a new low in U.S.-Russia relations ... already soured by differences on Ukraine and Syria.
Experts say Obama is trying to deter Russia and other foreign governments from taking advantage of cyber attacks in the future.
It remains unclear whether President-elect Donald Trump would seek to roll back the measures when he takes office on January 20th.
