This is the CHEAPEST, FASTEST, and EASIEST way to SECURELY mount a guitar for display on a wall. I emphasize the work SECURELY because the other cheapest, fastest, and easiest way to mount a guitar on the wall is to use this:

DO NOT USE THOSE mounts, they are NOT SECURE! I know first hand. Instead build these mounts yourself, it's not much work, and it's not much more expensive, but it is a much better and safer design. And one of your favorite basses won't end up on the floor...

To be more accurate, it was the anchor that failed not the hook. I have bought several of those inexpensive hangers, and I always upgrade the hardware with stainless steel screws and go directly into a stud. But still a great vid on a budget DIY guitar hanger. Thanks.

I have those mounts as well and I've never had an issue. I have a heavy 11lb bass hanging off of one and it's been there for over a year with no issues. Your mount didn't fail; your anchors did. If it was properly installed, it never should have torn out of the wall like that... If you're that worried, throw those anchors away and screw them directly into studs.

Just a note from a concerned guitar owner. How about never using plugs or anchors? Studs are the only real safe thing to screw into.
If your studs aren't in an optimal spot then put the hangers on a 1x4 or 2x4 and screw that board horizontally into the studs onto the wall.

I've been using utility hooks from home depot for over 20 years no problems...just 2 suggestions..
I'd attach them to a horizontal 2x4 or any beam that can look like a decorative trim/ moulding but I would attach it directly to the wall studs with the weight distributed across the wall (for multiple les pauls)..then the individual hooks can go into that beam...BUT..be very careful...these hooks will eat your lacquer on the headstock so I'd add a felt or velvet or some kind of fabric on top of it

Pro Tip: Drill your main hole at a slight angle just in case. You'll get a little extra relief as the hook will lean back (point upward). I've got 8 of these that I made and they've been working great for about 8 years now. The foam will eventually wear off, but just get another hook and screw it into the same hole!

Thumbs up for the inspiration. I used to be a journeyman carpenter installing learning aids in classrooms where you had to meet high earthquake and destructive children proof standards. Wall anchors like the ones shipped with the cheepo mounts wouldn't have made the cut, nor would the ones you use on your design. If you want to go with the thin profile of the original but still keep the rigidity of your design and don't want to hassle with hitting a stud, upgrade to toggler drywall anchors. Cost will go up, but a couple more bucks to hold up $2k is worth it IMO.

Anyone with nitrocellulose laquor be warned--the coating on those hooks (even the "guitar specific" ones you can buy like String Swing) can damage your finish.

It increases the cost of the DIY a bit, but also get some thick felt, velvet, whatever cloth you live the look of, and stitch it around the coated parts of the hook/hanger.

Might add a few dollars to the cost, but well bloody worth it!

Also Guns and Guitars, when's that video on the "three pickguards one guitar" coming?

If you can mount it directly on a stud it is a better choice. Standard stud spacing is 16 inches on center. A good rare earth magnet available at Homedepot will find the nails used to secure the sheetrock to the stud. If you mount directly on a stud you will only need 2 screws. and at 16 inches apart it gives you a space between guitars of about 3 to 4 inches.

I forgot the warning
Keep magnets away from computers and hard drives.
They will delete everything even the operating system

No matter how much I may like a video I rarely give out likes, but this is right up my alley for hanging my bass up in my bedroom. This is easily the quickest, cheapest, and best solution for wall mounting your guitars!

I bought some on amazon and they work great, it’s really all about the anchors you use, it you use say two anchors rated at 50 lbs each, you aren’t gonna have a problem, still I love this video, great for making custom looking hangers on the cheap.

I bought a six pack of black metal guitar hangers on Amazon and mounted them to an 8ft piece of mahogany. Looks stunning.

I use only 2 anchors on top, and it's plenty. I use the metal drywall anchors though, not the plastic. It can handle a lot more weight. They are worth looking into if you love your guitars as much as I do.

The mounts you had we're fine but only when they're mounted to a stud. I've got a few two hole mounts simmilar to those but they're all in studs so I don't have to worry about my $800 amerimexican partscaster taking a tumble.

wall mounts are more about the screws and plugs you use rather than the mounts themselves, the mounts you used are probably 100% fine and the way they were fixed to the wall was off. using more screws is wise but what's even better is increasing the amount of force needed to pull the thing off the wall by reducing it's leverage, which can be done with a bigger bit of wood as a base plate and having a larger distance between the top and bottom screws. with mounts you buy in (or already own) you can affix them with normal wood screws to a larger base plate, and that base plate attaches to the wall.

never thought about that. I'm using 12mm rebar and weld it together to steel plate. i guess it pretty overkilled😅
