Trailer of the new album if German pianist Michael Gees. ImproviSatie brings together works of Satie with improvisation by Michael Gees.

Michael Gees: "The (listening) expectation that a piece has to sound exactly the way it was written has always been challenging to me. For I am interested in the development potential of a composer's idea, and not just in its rendition. I don't like to satisfy myself with musical creation which is already completed as is, but I want to be inspired by the moment of its performance, in this particular room, with this particular grand piano, in front of and with these human beings. This leads to spontaneous variations and unexpected listening adventures. The composition comes into being now, at this moment, as if it was music extempore."

I just discovered this album through Spotify, and WOW, it's gripping and mesmerizing. Some of the most original, lyrical and dynamic versions of Satie works I've ever heard. And I've heard quite a lot of them. It sometimes feels like a bit of the more complex Debussy harmonies are mixed through the Satie minimalism. Very interesting that it's improv without leading towards typical improv genres like jazz or baroque. I do love Jacques Loussier Trio's jazz versions of the Gymnopedies and Gnosiennes too, but what Michael Gees has particularly impressed me... the lyrical, dynamic, sensitive and powerful creativity.
