LIVE: HSBC AGM targeted by Extinction Rebellion

Показать описание
Concerned citizens from Money Rebellion are presenting a tableau of fossil-fuelled excess to HSBC management and shareholders filing into the bank’s Annual General Meeting at London’s South Bank Centre this morning.
Members of the Extinction Rebellion group, which specifically targets financial institutions, toast their profits with champagne flutes filled with fake oil in front of a banner reading, ‘Dear future generations, please accept our apologies. We were rolling drunk on petroleum’, a quote by the author Kurt Vonnegut.
Expect more non-violent mischief as the livestream progresses…but why?
In 2021 alone, HSBC invested nearly $18 billion in the fossil fuel industry, and last May news leaked that HSBC had stakes in companies planning 73 new coal power plants. The multinational banking and financial services firm remains a major banker for Saudi Aramco and Exxonmobil, which are ranked first and fourth respectively in the Carbon Majors database of fossil fuel companies responsible for global carbon emissions since 1965. HSBC also owns equity stakes in five of the biggest Russian oil and gas companies – Gazprom, Rosneft, Tatneft, Lukoil and Novatek – helping to fund the invasion in Ukraine.
This action comes following a stark warning from the UN Secretary General earlier this month that investment in new fossil fuels is ‘moral and economic madness’. Our message to HSBC’s stakeholders is clear: don’t be on the wrong side of history, funding the destruction of a liveable future: use your influence to drive the crucial transition towards a low-carbon economy!
