How a Failed VW Transmission Sent This Car to the Junkyard??

preview_player

This Automatic transmission had poor shifting. That lead to this 2006 VW Touareg basically being scrap. In this video we teardown this transmission to find the transmission failure. Transmission failure is a common vehicle failure, but this Touareg transmission is pretty solid! #humblemechanic #VW #fail

“Lifetime fluid” is very expensive in the long run. I’ve always done my DSG changes strictly on 40k intervals. Even though the fluid looks fine I still change it on time and have never had a problem with any of them.

I absolutely marvel at how complex automatic transmissions are, and that they last for as long as they do. Now the adoption of classic automatic transmissions are coming to a close with the adoption of electric vehicles. Servicing these old transmissions will be a black art 20-30 years from now. Heck - it's a black art today with some dealerships/auto shops! 😆 Thanks for the teardown Charles!

The first transmission I ever opened was from the 90s, first it was 98% metal second it looked way better than this one, and the outer case was covered in dirt and grime. kinda funny, buying the whole overhaul kit was less than 500 dollars, but it does take countless hours of Assembly to rebuild a transmission. It's sad to know, like on any other industry the coast to repair never comes from the spare parts, it mostly comes from the aggregate cost of service.
and that is why everything is disposable, and they stop making spares for old models.

Love when you do these. I hate to see an otherwise salvagable car junked.

When I was first an apprentice at the GM stealership, I worked with our master tech and he was a transmission specialist. It was always a treat to watch him shred one apart and go through it. If it's not something you do often, transmission work is unnerving to say the least

As a Ford transmission tech (aka 8F35 and 10R60/80/140s pay my bills), I find it strangely soothing to watch teardown and rebuilds of various transmissions. I should probably find a few on the A4CF2 since my Elantra is starting to act stupid in shifts. My Focus has been an absolute monster. I guess the 4F27e is the best.

In my 10+ years with VW/Audi, I had ONE of those O9D transmissions fail. Did a few Valve bodies but IMO one of the Best Transmissions Aisin ever made.

Very informational. It'd be cool to see an 02J teardown.

I would really love to see a G60 tear down but we all know what that usually means as far as car selection. great video as always

Exactly same kind of thing that did my Nissan maxima in with a older stepped transmission. It’s still going living on lucus after 3x drain and fill it’s lost 4th gear but still moves. Going on. 3-4 years now

Been out of the transmission game for about 8 years now. Nice to keep up with someone still in the trenches.

I'm so intrigued in how things work, how about fixing that transmission for us average people

The second part of the video where you talk about how it all works could really benefit from a small whiteboard I think.

Years ago a coworker of mine bought a W8 Touareg for about three grand. The starter went about a month in. Was quoted 2 grand to replace. She sold it a few days later
