A year or two before he died I travelled from London to Paris to watch him. I arrived at the club in the afternoon while they were sound checking. They let me in, and had the amazing privilege to watch Art up close. The mind-blowing power, combined with amazing swing was awesome...a treasured memory!

I bumped into a young worker in a music shop today, he was in the drums section. I asked him who his favourite drummer is, he said Art Blakey. So good to hear that people in their early 20's understand this groundbreaking drummer.

That smile while he plays is so genuine. Good to see him doing what he loves.

Those Pressed tolls were among his many incredible signatures. Of all the qualities I appreciate his Mentorship qualities the most. He started the Messengers with legendary Pianist Hirace Silver. I grew up in NYC in the 60s and 70s. My Father, also born and raised in New York grew uo with Bebop and Art was amongst his Favorite drummers and musicians. Many of my favorite Musicians have gone through his band. I'd see him several times a year either in clubs like the Vanguard or Jazzmobile . It was at the latter where he really connected wuth his audience. A free Concert series in tge summer created to entertain and bring music to everyone. He'd talk about the beauty and greatness of the Music, it's culture and need to be continued. He was a proud Man, serious and with a sense of humor.

I was very fortunate to see him play in Rochester, NY. He hosted a drum workshop. It changed my life, and I am always in awe of his playing.

In this world of chops and complexity, it's refreshing when you hear someone like Blakey make you feel great music.

What sticks with me about this great presentation was Art’s passion and honesty in presenting his music on the bandstand. His do or die stance and how he communicated with his band members.

Love him!! “Alamode” and “Free for All” are two of his masterpieces that *I LOVE* most! ❤

Got to know Mr. Blakey when I was in my teens, a few years before he passed. He had his problems, to be sure, some of which weren't widely known, but he couldn't have been kinder or more generous to me. Really miss him. Thanks so much, Brandon, for such doing such a wonderful job paying tribute to the man and his, well, art.

it's good when Drumeo does these "genius of" videos for older music...I couldn't hear the bass drum at all from those recordings, but with modern recording and video quality, these bad old recordings come to life!!!

Thank you Drumeo and Brandon for the hard work you put into this video! Art is very historic and even just a few of these licks you broke down would help anyone wanting to improve their Jazz chops.

I feel the need to qualify this comment before I make it, as such I must profess to not being a particularly dedicated fan of jazz music. I'm simply much more Rock 'n Roll. That's what stirs my soul man, RIP Lemmy 🙏🤘🫡❤️‍🔥 However... having watched this vid, and recognising several classic tracks, and having heard in Mr Blakey's diverse repertoire of quite incredible, technical and above all soulful (in the human, not musical sense of that word) journeys around the kit, several beats and fills that were so reminiscent of Mr Bonham Sr. that I can only surmise that Bonzo was influenced by Art in no small way, whether consciously or not; I can only say that the series title of, "The genius of..." has rarely, if ever been more apt!
Thank you Drumeo for always bringin' it.
Love what you do 🫡🤘❤️‍🔥🙏

Man I was lucky to see so many of his contemporaries and compatriots who still toured the south in the early eighties, and so many new torch-bearers who were influenced by his groove...he was such an innovative jazz engine, My fav albums of his includes, 'Unstoppable', that's what he was.

Never another like him

To begin with I really love Art Blakey's music. I think what drew me into his music was the thumping percussion and showmanship. What I didn't appreciate until now was his elevated technique and musicianship. Thank you!
