In this Give It Away guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this great song off of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik album.

The tuning is standard tuning E A D G B E.

The intro is one of the hardest parts of the song to get right. John Frusciante incorporates some difficult unison bends while also holding down a double-stop.

The main riff, which is the verse of the song, consists of a single note riff that has some tricky rhythms in it. You will also need to be pretty good at muting unwanted strings on the guitar, as Frusciante uses lots of muting throughout the riff. The muting helps make the single notes sound big and fat, a signature technique of his.

The chorus is a riff that will vary throughout the song, so play close attention to the difference between them.

For the solos, since they are created using a backwards guitar recording effect in the studio, I have instead demonstrated the three scale types you can use to create an improvised solo. These are the same scales Frusciante used for his solos.

Have fun with this fun yet challenging song from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the great John Frusciante! #giveitawayguitarlesson #redhotchilipeppers #johnfrusciante

Thanks! Carl..

Hey man, RHCP are amazing! I feel like Frusciante's playing really has left a mark on everyone, just his name alone is legendary in the guitar community. Awesome work man!

Thanks Carl. Every lesson you post is a gift. Please consider adding to your list Ice Cream Man by Van Halen.

I've always thought of the ending power chord section as the "Sweet Leaf" section. I think I even read an interview with Frusciante in some guitar magazine back in the day that he had been getting into Black Sabbath around the time of Blood Sugar, so he wanted to put in a little Iommi tribute there

Finally a good in depth version of the song! Thank you so much Carl

So much of Frusciante's style seems so improvised that it feels almost impossible to emulate consistently.

That ending riff sounds very much as the beginning riff in 'Sweat leaf' by Black sabbath.
