Demon slayer is set in 1900s era - taisho period. The story is simple and based on japanese traditions & cultural values.
The biggest asset of demon slayer is its animation which you already love.
The 2nd great thing is its characters (my fav is yet to come) - which you will come to love including the side characters.

On myanimelist, it is the 7th most popular & on anilist it is 2nd.
Demon slayer movie is the highest grossing movie of 2020 & the highest all time in japan.
Last Season 2 had highest ratings on japanese tv among all anime beating even winter olympics.

Giyu, the demon slayer guy, doesn't sweet talk. He tells the harsh truth in your face and was trying to tell Tanjiro to use his feelings and devastation and turn it into motivation to fight and protect Nezuko instead.

Giyuu, the demon slayer, is a veteran and has seen some serious stuff. In his inner monologue he said someone in the past said the same thing only to get devoured by their sibling. He wasn't buying it until Nezuko showed him beyond a shadow of a doubt that she could never hurt her brother. Anyone else would have put her down and been done with it but he stuck his neck out, let her live and is taking a real risk for them. If Nezuko should ever flip and start killing every single person who dies is his fault. Give my man some credit.

There will be more humor in future episodes to help you with the sad parts. But yes, there are parts that make you cry. It is a sad beginning, but you will love Tanjiro and Nezuko more and more as the series goes!

This is the kind of Episode 1 that gets me addicted to a series. I enjoy a series that doesn't pull any punches. You know right away that it's going to be real shit, not "haha they lived because we need them to, and his life is perfect because we need it to be."

I also LOVE this era of Japan. It started with Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X, and Samurai Champloo. Every time I see an anime set in this time period, I love it.
