Imagine how deadly he would have been in this era with the three pt shot. He averaged nearly 30 without it

If you know this man's back story, everything he went through as a child and how hard he's worked, to do it the right way.. Much respect, truly an underrated legend!!

I watched this game live on television. What is almost as remarkable as the shot is West's reaction. Look how calm he is while all of his teammates and the home crowd are going wild. It appears his only concern was double-checking the overhead scoreboard to make sure that the shot counted. Remarkable is a word that describes his entire career.

The game was blacked out in Los Angeles, so I was listening to Chick Hearn on the radio. All I heard was "Jerry West's 60-footer at the buzzer...."....and then just the roar of the crowd for about 20 seconds. I never heard Hearn's call, but it didn't matter. If you were a Laker fan, the roar of the crowd told you everything you needed to know.

That shot was not luck -- pure skill. Celtics fan here, and West has my total and complete respect. He got a bum rap going up against "stacked Celtics teams". West is the "logo" of the NBA for good reason. He should remain as the logo forever. He earned it! Remember your ancestors... Show respect...

Too bad it was only a two or they would've won the game and not go to overtime!

I didn't have a great relationship with my dad, but my fondest memories were going to see the 1969-1974 knicks teams in the 'new' MSG and watching this championship series on the television. We saw some great games and players at Madison Square Garden....my dad also asked the Knicks if they could have a player come down to our town in Central Jersey and speak to the underprivileged and disenfranchised in our city which had just had gone through race riots a couple of years earlier. Who shows up in his green caddilac but Willis Reed with his New York license plate WR-19! I was 11 years old and lucky enough to drive in the car with Willis and to have dinner with him and my dad. The people in the restaurant couldn't believe it....Willis was very kind to everyone but asked that he be able to enjoy his meal. When folks came for autographs, he had a briefcase full of pre signed autographs on pamphlets that advertised his basketball camp! Great guy. And I look back fondly at those days when tthe Knicks were kings and my dad and I had something in common that we enjoyed together. Willis, Clude, Bradley, Debusscher and later Earl the Pearl... I later found our that my dad had seen some horrible things in the Korean war when he served with the 2nd infantry division. I'm happy to say we reconconciled about 15 years before he passed. He is now buried in Arlington. But we really bonded over those great Knicks teams! BTW Willis told me personally that Wilt was the toughest player he ever played against but Oscar Robertson was the greatest he ever saw. Amazing time.

I remember watching that game. I was 17 at the time screaming my head off, as I was a Laker fan living in Southern California.

Jerry West always said he hated that moment in basketball history, because even though he got the game into overtime, the Lakers lost that game.
