I do see your point. But most of the time teaching English is a way to support yourself on the ground in a country. There is a big problem with poverty tourism. Poverty should not be an adventure. I also think the deeper issue is that in development--colonial attitudes have been fostered. Development is defined in terms of the degree a country measures up to western conceptions of Development. In the global economy the Global North makes a net profit of 3 trillion a year. So in what sense do we really care when the poor are net creditors to the rich? True impact is about sustaining local autonomy, and then the creation is about how you bring that to scale. Too much of development is part of entrenched systems. As Einstein said, "you cant solve a problem using the same thinking that was used to create the problem in the first place."
