Apple Music Spatial Audio: What you NEED to know!

Apple are (as is customary) making a huge fuss of Apple Music Spatial Audio, but is it any good?

I spent a whole week listening almost exclusively to Apple Music spatial audio, which is an implementation of Dolby Atmos. Here's how to set it up and use it, and what I thought of it!

I had the same experience, it's mostly hit or miss but Jazz really sounds impressive in Atmos (or Classical Music).

I deactivated Atmos at the moment. There are so many songs that sounds terrible that it's a hassle to be switching on and off. At the moment I believe it's only good for movies. Perhaps in a couple of years.

Tried pro-logic back in the day. Was so underwhelmed I went back to 2 channel stereo, and have been there ever since.

"superficial sonic fireworks" sums it up nicely. It's a fun experiment but ultimately almost all music sounds better in 2-channel stereo. And the people who mixed your favourite album won't appreciate you listening to it through Spatial Audio.

Great video. I think once talent catches up to technology spacial audio will replace stereo. Stereo will one day seem as quaint as AM radio. The truth is stereo also had terrible producers in the beginning and is just as “manually” manipulated. I love how you summed up your video.

Spatial audio on apple tv app movies and series sounds amazing, especially the head tracking aspect with airpods max!! And the little spatial audio logo on the control centre headphones control animated to show you it is happening. But if you download the video ( even with download atmos setting on) the effect is gone. In apple music app, the spatial audio logo in control centre shows the effect is not on and tracks sound worse than stereo mixes!!

Are your AirPods Max updated to latest firmware? I found after the update spatial audio tracks sounded a LOT better

The proper way to listen to Spatial Audio is to buy an Apple TV 4K (2021) and hook it up to an Atmos capable AV Receiver with a 5.1 or more speaker setup. The sound quality improvement with this setup surpasses Atmos on AirPod Pro's/Max by a mile. Listening to recently released albums of Taylor Swift's Red and Sting's The Bridge reminds me of multi-channel SACD's. St. Vincent's Daddy's Home album is a multi-channel experience that needs to be heard. And I must say streaming lossless audio on the Apple TV sounds as good as playing CD's on my Oppo player.

I think atmos/multi channel audio for music is bogus!! In real world no musician plays his instrument from the back side of the listener or from the celling. It is only good for movies. Atmos music through a multi channel setup might work for some people but atmos through headphone is just a joke. Already tried few times in tidal and it failed to impress everytime.

Some real mess-ups for me is STP-Tiny music, vocals as u said on another, are like in another room. It's a muffled mess

The last 4 tracks on All things must pass, Johnnies birthday has NO audio, and the other 3 tracks are bootleg audio

Luther Vandross ATMOS sounds brilliant, cept Luther's vocals are not there

I am only one of a few getting those issues, not sure how it can happen as most ATMOS sound fab on my system from Apple

It's so strange that Apple releases lossless to appeal to audiophiles and releases Atmos that appeals to no one
