Actually there was toilet paper in the 1860's. A case of TP contained 100 rolls. It cost between $2.25 to $6.15 depending on the grade of TP. $3.75 per case seemed to be the average price per case for medium grade.
A single roll was 10 cents and a dozen rolls was $1, .20.
The things you find out about when researching the Wild West. :)
I remember an old friend taking me to an old grist mill in NY state that was being restored. It certainly gave me an appreciation of what it took to grind different grain crops for so many uses.

Love this, I couldn't help but laugh with the corn cob, my daddy actually grew up just like that!! His parents were very poor and they had everything except the Grismill on their property! Their main meat though was pork, back in the day it was kinda hard to smoke beef and it keep without spoiling. They also had an old root cellar where they kept their fruits and stuff :) We are from way down south in Louisiana!

I love going to places like this. So interesting, and your humor was fun too. I loved Paul Lynde, especially as the zany uncle Arthur on Bewitched. My favorite show as a kid. Thanks for another good one to watch❤

As a kid we went to a working village to watch people in period clothes work. I can still smell the smoked meats. Paul Lynde made that game show, very funny.

Very much enjoyed this brief look at central Ohio, particularly the grist mill. Always important that some of these places be preserved to help us put modernity in context. As for the question of early American t.p., I was told that from the very late 1800s and following decades, pages from outdated Sears and Wards catalogs were put to their final use. Thanks John and Co. for another enjoyable episode.👍

As an english man whose partner is from the southern united states I admit im aware of the past uses for corn cobs, and this is apparently where the american corn related term for one's fundament originated from

Apparently for much of history in the North of England, we used Moss for this purpose, which grows very abundantly in patches of woodland here

Interesting that smoked meat gets at first left in salt to dry it out. That's also how the Ancient Egytian mummification process starts... by leaving the body in natron for several weeks.

Bon apetit... 🤣🤣
