I'm tired of hearing "Three Houses was just a social sim." It really wasn't. The tea time and everything was all completely optional, you could easily skip dialogue if you found it annoying. That's not the reason why people loved Three Houses. People loved it due to its complex and morally gray characters along with its world building and plot.

People are blowing the monestary tasks out of proportion. All of them are skippable. They GIVE you an option to skip those things AND randomize the tutoring sessions, the one task that was relevant to class advancement. Three Houses broke away from the Fire Emblem formula of the archetypical noble lords and protagonists by giving us the three lords with the most complicated motivations and backstories by a large margin.

Did 3H really focus on social sim aspects…? I keep hearing that but I’m not really seeing why.

I've been saying for years that Fire Emblem fans are Fire Emblem's biggest haters. I haven't played a single one i don't like

Reducing Three Houses into just its social sim aspects feels just like an ignorant crime lmao. Morally gray characters? High customization of units? Varying maps? A rich lore?

If you want a social sim Fire Emblem, Awakening does that for you.

I’m sorry but if you think three houses was more focused on the social aspect then I will immediately assume three houses was your first fire emblem game. Three houses was the first game since awakening to not give you the option to marry or have kids. You could do it, but at the very end of the game. All you got was a short cutscene, when in other games you could literally kiss your significant other and talk to your children from the future. Hell even engage gives you the option to wake up to an ally and eat to increase support which is not that different from what three houses did. If you think that just because you could return lost items and have tea parties it immediately became a social sim, you must be new here lmao😭

Yall gotta stop trying to make 3H less than it was to prop up Engage; 3H was a great strategy game with optional social sim elements and a complex plot. Engage has a great gameplay--possibly the best yet--but lacks charismatic characters and interesting plot, which are a staple of Fire Emblem.

'Return to form'. 3H wasn't the first game to have a lot of more social sim aspects, Fates' My Castle, for example, Genealogy depended on you pairing up characters for gen2, supports are also old. Deep stories are old FE's norm, not the other way around.

Three houses set the bar for great character writing so high and had a rich and complex story while „engage“ feels shallow and empty. Only the combat is good

Bro summoned the whole fe3h fandom with that one line.

Yeah, the problem with the game is that it's all just gameplay. The music is mid at best, the story is a joke, the characters have to be some of the most forgettable in the series, and the game is completely carried by a nostalgia factor of bringing back past characters. Three Houses was not a social sim it was an ambiguous and deeply complex story full of characters that had actual depth to them. You know motivation, struggles, depth again, and it made them feel like an actual person at the best moments. The gameplay was amazing too with the best soundtrack of the entire series. Instead everything in Engage feels shallow and cliche. I don't know what the hell the writers were doing, but so much of the dialogue is hard to watch and listen too. Animations in the conversations as well were like someone in college was just. learning

"Return to Form" yeah if you only played Fates

Sorry, but three houses was better. More engaging characters and story. Three houses music is way better. The only thing i can give to engage is gameplay improvements.

Now that time has passed, for me
- Engage: better gameplay and mechanics. More fun to play due to the smooth combat
- Three Houses: the story trumps everything

I feel like people forget engage's story kind of sucks because im pretty sure it was supposed to be an anniversary game. And for a game where its just a celebration, its not bad. It's cool seeing the main protagonists from the past games come back and see what the next main gane night hold if engage looked this good. Its not too great by any means in terms of story (even though the dlc story really had me invested in nel). I just think comparing this game yo three houses isnt entirely fair since this isn't really the same thing. To me it's kind of like comparing the warrior games or heroes to the mainline games

Ah yes. Tactics, I'm a dragon, magic items, basic turn based combat, and not least of all, great boobs. We truly are back to basics

I know engage will be a great game but we should honestly blame ourselves for focusing on the social sim aspects of 3H, its not the main focus, the game just kept it incase you want to increase your support level but it really isnt necessary and increasing the support level is honestly not that hard.

Engage from a gameplay perspective has to be the most fun I've had in the fire emblem in a long time; the story however was downright awful. It felt like a chore to come back and play each chapter, despite how much fun i had with the gameplay, because the story just frustrated me so much. I spent a lot of time investing in the supports to get to know the characters better so I'd care about them enough to keep them alive during each map because the story made 0 efforts to include 95% of its cast in it and not even the bond I forged with the characters through their support conversations could save the story for me. The dlc was a little better story wise, but still nothing to blow my mind. Visually speaking it's a beautiful game, fun gameplay but the story was a no for me. The Music also wasn't as enjoyable as that of previous titles imo

Three houses on the other hand had a captivating story and incredible replayability. The gameplay wasn't perfect, the graphics weren't all that great, but i had significantly more fun with three houses than I had with engage. Average fire emblem gameplay, not so great graphics but an amazing and complex story to make up for what the game is lacking in. The music also was absolutely amazing, the whole shambhala dubstep was out of pocket but the other tracks were amazing

I'm a player who enjoys the story, characters and music in a game, those are the most important factors for replayability for me and if those are lacking a game just ends up feeling like a chore, regardless of how amazing the actual gameplay is. I just can't bring myself to play through a bland story more than once, even if i enjoy the gameplay
