Welcome to this Neon Live In Los Angeles Guitar Tutorial by John Mayer!

The part that evades most learners is the proper picking technique that John uses and details in his TikTok video. The crux of it is that you use your thumb and index finger playing the pattern at 16th notes continuously thumb/index/thumb/index. The thumb slap is also an important element that gives the riff a percussive feel.

I've made it fam!! Only took ~5 weeks ;) just take it slow, even half bar by half bar in some of those harder intro/bridge sections, and you'll get there. Now for me to start polishing 🔥

This song made me realise 2 things

Every few years I try and tackle this song and ended up moving on before much progress. This time around I found this video and it pushed me over the edge. For the first time after likely 8 years of trying I played this song start to finish, and I'm so happy. Thank you for this wonderful, full length tutorial! It only took 2 evenings of practicing, goes to show how well this instructional video is put together!!!
For those reading who are still struggling, while is tutorial is hands down the best, it is a tough song, no way around that. So my tip: I picked up the finger picking style about a year or two ago by learning Who Says and Stop this train, so this go around this video helped me keen in on the fingering. I have big hands so used thumb for bass notes, but the tabs and illustrations are dead on.
Seriously - I can't thank you enough Dave!
