How to Update a MusicCast AV Receiver’s Firmware

Watch a video to learn how to quickly update a networked AV receiver’s firmware so that it can take advantage of MusicCast. The quickest way to see if you have a MusicCast AV receiver is to look along the top of the front panel for the logo. Make sure your AV receiver is connected to a network and then follow the simple directions.

Once you’ve updated your AV receiver, download the MusicCast app on Apple® App Store or Google Play. You’re now ready to connect your AV receiver with a MusicCast compatible product and be able to enjoy the freedom of wireless multiroom audio.

*AV receivers that support MusicCast include: RX-V479, RX-V579, RX-V679, RX-V779, RX-A550, RX-A750, RX-A850, RX-A1050, RX-A2050, RX-A3050, CX-A5100, RX-S601 and TSR-7790.

The update worked perfectly on my RX-S600 NETWORK receiver. It would have been nice if Yamaha included the written procedure here, but that is another thread. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like my receiver supports MusicCast since the Android App requests pushing the "Connect" button and this receiver doesn't have one. Oh, and neither does the RX-S601 which is supposed to support MusicCast. Is there a way to get this receiver to work?

Highly recommended you do NOT use the Multicast app to upgrade the firmware. Use a USB stick instead and manually do it.

Multicast told me there was a firmware update available (it turns out there wasn't a newer one). I had a failure updating (for some unknown reason) and it has left my firmware with an error. Now I have to send it in for servicing to clear the error. I can't restore the old firmware or flash over the existing now.


I did everything right using the Multicast software and it still failed.

The receiver still works thankfully but there is no way to clear the error with the firmware version reporting.

Hi, the update worked fine on my RX A 660 but since then I have no video output.
the HDMI cable is plugged in, I just tested it on a computer and it is not faulty nor is the TV. I have a red "HDMI" on the AVR screen when I select an HDMI input (maybe this is normal but I don't remember). I mean no output at all. No output of my inputs and also no display of AVR options, music relevant info, etc. I'm a bit annoyed...
