When Finland joined NATO in 2023, it abandoned a decades long policy of neutrality, instantly doubling the length of the military alliance’s borders with Russia. Now, Helsinki is an influential voice in navigating the next steps in the Russia-Ukraine war—as well as Europe’s relationship with a new U.S. administration.

At the Munich Security Conference, FP’s Ravi Agrawal will sit down with Finnish President Alexander Stubb. The two will discuss trade tensions with the Trump White House, the rise of the far right across Europe, and the fate of Ukraine.

Mr. Stubb is a very smart man. He answers all questions articulately and without hesitation. He has a clear command of relevant facts, and he has practical ideas for dealing with the situations in Ukraine and Europe. Furthermore, he does it in a language not his own.

Until a few weeks ago I was afraid and had reservations that we have little or no such leadership in Europe, read NATO, but nothing turns out to be further from the truth. This President of Finland is definitely someone who exudes confidence and can play a major role in the newly formed 'coalition of the willing'. Finland and Sweden actually have functioning militaries, unlike most other EU, UK, and Canada NATO countries. I can't imagine the buyer's remorse they must be having with NATO, finding out they are the heavy lifers and MOST other countries are just cheerleaders.

Europe ACT!!! Not Finland as it must protect its border. 1. Ukraine into NATO. 2. Russia's $300billion frozen reserves: arms for Ukraine. 3. More sanctions. 4. Coalition of the Willing (NATO states, Canada, UK, ..) kick Russians out = lasting peace.
