roots climbing's link in the comment below offers a very simple elegant solution for the gate holder that doesn't block the biner's "fully seated" function like this one does, as pointed out by Wayne Whitley below.

I like the ridgid stem idea. However, the gate holder interferes with the proper function of the carabiner. The gate holder prevents the bolt from sliding up the carabiner to the highest point, where it is supposed to be. This is, critically unsafe, because the carabiner is designed to be loaded from this highest point, in order to project the load onto the spine of the carabiner. Loading the carabiner in any other way drastically reduces its load rating. The Kong Panic costs under $50. Worth it.
