PS1 Top 5 Racing Games

Let me make things clear:

This is MY opinion of which games are great -- this is not a fact-sheet :-)
I'm sure some of you may disagree with my choices -- feel free to comment.

I'm also well aware that some of the games on my list have seen sequels released -- but remember sometimes the first game was the most unique. My opinion is that some sequels aren't as good as the first game -- so it's not because I've forgotten about the sequels of some of the games.

The music track in the video is the Russian Pop Band "Комбинация (Kombinaciya)" with their track "American Boy".

Rage Racer was an amazing racer, but the best racer of them all was easily the first Gran Turismo. My jaw dropped to the ground when i first played that, simply mesmerizing stuff

I'd have to say I agree with you on these 5. Really solid racing games here. Definitely some of the popular titles as well. Did you ever get a GameShark? There were some cool things you could do on NFS High Stakes with one of those. =P

GT2 and TOCA 2 were both fantastic games that improved on their prequels along with the first CMR game. Ridge Racer Type 4 and V Rally also deserve a mention but then there are so many great racing games on the ps1 i could be here all year  thinkin bout them.

yes i agree the GT is best racing games :)

I remember a lot of the codes for this game were aesthetic stuff. In-car view for police chases, weird color schemes for different vehicles, though there was one that changed the driving physics. Cars could react a lot faster to cornering, even at high speeds. It almost gave the driving a real arcade-like feel.

There are so many great racing games on the PS1, I could never narrow it down to only 5 games.

If you can find Jarret and Labonte racing on the Ps1 its pretty damn good also, with real car damage, fun, fun, fun.

@killercrusher232 I agree, they really were strong. Rollcage, Destruction Derby and Formula One were benchmark games and worthy of many top games lists...guess I just made a decision not to include "non-traditional racers" But hey 5 games is still way to few to really show the great span of racing games on the PS1 ;-)

@killercrusher232 Thanks for your input. I agree that most of the games you mention were great. But keep in mind the video is my personal opinion, not a fact sheet. Just like the games you mention are your personal opinion. Furthermore the games in the video are more "classic racing genre games" than the ones you point out, which are more sci-fi racers and car mayhem/combat games except for "Formula One".

NFS: High stakes and GT2! oh god spend morning, evenings, weekend and even nights playing those games and especially with GT2. :) thanks for this video mate!

a top 5 isnt enough ps1 was glorious in the old days, franchises like Rally Cross, Driver, Destruction Derby, V-Rally, Test Drive, Ridge Racer, Jet moto.. i must have played at least one game of each franchise those were the days man :)

Mine would be
Simulators:
3. F1 Championship Season 2000 (best F1 racing game in my opinion for PS1)
2. Colin Mcrae Rally 2.0 (best rally game - i love rally games and 4 wheel cars)
1. Gran Turismo 2 (We all know why)

Arcade:
3. Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed (its a solid racing game - specially if you are a Porsche Fan)
2. Need for Speed: V-Rally 2 (Best PS1 rally game after Mcrae 2.0)
1. Need for Speed: High Stakes (Best Classic NFS for PS1, though Hot Pursuit is more innovative and is just as fun)

Note: I only include games with real world cars.

Damn ! The TOCA (not race driver) series was great. Still very enjoyable. Simply the best touring car games.

@anarxisttt Thanks for your input, I'm not sure I totally agree - I'm not that big fan of V-Rally and NFS 2. And the video is my personal opinion and not a fact sheet. I choose the first Colin McRae games because it really was the first, and therefor a revolution when it game out, where as the second Colin McRae game was more of an evolution on the first game :-)

My personal picks would be Destruction Derby 2, NASCAR Rumble, Test Drive 5, Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed and Gran Turismo 2.
