France’s AMX 10 RC – Not Bad, Though not Really a Tank

Designed for armored reconnaissance purposes, meet one of the best wheeled tank destroyer made by French, AMX-10 RC armored vehicle. Different from the amphibious AMX-10 P, the AMX-10 RC is mainly deployed for reconnaissance missions in dangerous environments or for effective direct fire support in the battlefield. Recently, President Emmanuel Macron promised Ukraine to supply AMX-10 RC armored vehicles, but his administration did not specify how many or when they would be delivered. So, how is it going on?

The French AMX series on World of Tanks are some of my all time favorite, a very good balance of armor, mobility, and firepower, and the French make some very good looking and unique looking armor vehicles compared to other countries in my opinion.

Not Bad, Though not Really a Tank. Correct. This a fire support and recon vehicle, used to support combined arms teams. The AMX-10 RC is a French armoured fighting vehicle manufactured by Nexter Systems for armoured reconnaissance purposes. Equipping French cavalry units since 1981, over 240 remained in service with the French Army in 2021. 108 units were sold to Morocco and 12 to Qatar. "RC" stands for "Roues-Canon", meaning "wheeled gun".

Caesar is a first rate system. The AMX-10 can't go toe-to-toe with Russian MBTs, but it was never meant to do so. It's for recon, and it's great in that role. It will also be great in a supporting role in an aggressive/assault role--MBTs backed up by AMX-10s would be formidable. You really wouldn't want to be in a BMP, BMD, BRDM, or MT-LB staring down a 105mm gun. Jeez, I don't think I'd want to face that in a T-72 or T-80, let alone something older. Anything not a main battle tank from the 1980s or 1990s or newer would be toast.

There's a linguistic misunderstanding. "Char" in French has a much more generic meaning than Tank. It's the word that gave birth to the English word "car." A real tank in French is called "char blindé": armoured car. The etymology of "tank" is the hindi word "tānkh" and seems to have been used by the british because they looked like water or fuel tanks. Anyway, when President Macron says we are sending "chars" they don't necessarily mean tanks.

One, it's not a tank destroyer. They have a specialized 105 mm. It's not the closest thing to a light tank in NATO. Italy has the Centauro, which has way more armor and a 120mm cannon.

30 AMX 10 RC will be delivered at the end of this month. Unit already trained in France.

Similar economy to UK. Similar military force to UK. And yet France has contributed very very little. I'm actually really surprised considering how allied nations have flocked to Frances defence in the past.
