This ongoing series of online talks—each focusing on a single work of art— explores the many and sometimes lesser known stories behind artworks in the Guggenheim's collection. In this program, Dr. Andrew Dowling, Reader in Contemporary Spanish History at Cardiff University, joins Dr. Vivien Greene, Senior Curator, 19th- and Early 20th- Century Art, for a discussion on Joan Miró's "The Tilled Field" (1923-1924), Catalan independence, and the separatist movement.
About the speakers
Dr. Andrew Dowling (Cardiff University) researches on the history and politics of Catalonia. He is the author of "The Rise of Catalan Independence: Spain’s Territorial Crisis" published in 2018 and is currently writing "A Short History of Catalonia", from early times to the present, due in spring 2022.
Dr. Vivien Greene has been a Guggenheim curator since 1993 and specializes in late 19th- and early 20th-century European art with concentrations in Italian modernism and international currents in turn-of-the-century art and culture.
