Let’s turn to a new writer, Anne McCaffrey, and her science fiction fantasy blend creation called Pern. We’ll look at the first book in the Dragonriders of Pern series, Dragonflight. In this book a farflung colony is dealing with an astrological phenomenon that sees an orbiting body of their colony that sees this thing the locals call ”thread” that is a deadly substance. What will happen?

She is my favorite author. First found her books in high school and they cemented me as a fantasy reader for life. She melded science fiction and fantasy like no other, especially in later books when she introduced A.I.V.A.S.. Its been sad really when we lost her a few years ago (on my birthday), that so far her children have not been up to the task of reviving Pern. I also like her Crystal Singer books for more of a science fiction feel. She had a lot of strong female characters which is something early fantasy desperately needed.

Actually it _is_ sci-fi.... it is not hard sci-fi, but definitively sci-fi. Don't let the dragons fool you, everything is tech/science based.
