This video is a review and demonstration of DIY Hurdy-Gurdy Kit from Ugears.
It's price is about 70 $. It consists of 292 wooden parts and it took me six hours to assemble. And I couldn't stop myself to share my experience and to show how hurdy-gurdy sounds.
So... Is it beautiful? - Yes.
Is it hurdy-gurdy? - Yes.
Is it a real instrument? - I'm not sure. Comment – what do you think.

Ok, gonna be real. Your accent made this video several million times funnier to me than anyone could have intended. I thank you, for you have brightened my day

I have one of those kits. For anyone wanting to buy it, it sounds a lot better when you tune it. The melody string needs to be tuned to D and the bourdon string needs to be complimentary. They have videos on the ugears channel on how to do so.

When he said “I just wanted a hardy gardy”

I felt that.

This is what a Ouija Board would sound like if it were a musical instrument.

So happy I watched this video before buying, sounds like crap.

If you look at UGears they specialize in models for the mechanical hobbyist not for the musically inclined. I guarentee you that sound quality was not a big consideration for them but rather that you could admire the gears and mechanisms. Working together to produce the sound. Much in the way their model trains move or their mechanical safe's open.

Thank you. I was going to get this for my son who loves to build things and loves to learn new musical instruments. He will not be happy with the sound from this, so I will not waste my money. I am grateful to you for this video.

This is likely one of the greatest video reviews I've ever seen.

Sounds better than I expected. Bought this as a Christmas gift for a college music student.. it's more of a novelty. It's really cool looking and she had fun assembling it. Sort of like assembling Lego. The fact that it really works is a bonus.

Yes I built one ! It's no Stradivarius, but then it's not $10, 000, 000. It's tone might be improved by thicker strings, but I'm not sure . It does smell of burning wood, and I recommend that you use a hand - held vacuum attachment to vacuum over the Laser lines . It is good fun and I painted several panels and lines to highlight the Instrument . Another winner from Ugears.

I like the instrument. Cotton on the string would help, but there is allot more it needs. Its an interesting concept. I might try it.

It's pretty awesome, as a novelty you put in a curio cabinet or some kind of display case. Sounds like butt, to be very gentle. I saw it on an ad and figured it can't sound very good. The ad only has a real hurdy gurdy playing in the background. They wouldn't sell many if they did demos of the actual sound. Saved me time and money, much appreciated.

Replace the strings with real ones and rosin the wheel and it may actually sound halfway decent.

I want your pronunciation of “hurdy gurdy as my ringtone. I don’t know why but it makes me happy

Yeah, you definitely need to tune it...also wrap the strings in the cotton, add the rosin, and adjust the string height. It still doesn't sound like a fantastic hurdy gurdy, but it's more pleasant for sure.
