No, it's intended. Every Lego set now has spare pieces for small tiles, studs, spring loaded missiles, or small tools.

My dad always told me I built it wrong if it had pieces when I was a little kid. So one day, I bought him a set and saw him looking back through the instructions trying to find the pieces. It was fun watching him sit and suffer. Being a petty adult is fun sometimes, mainly as my little kid revenge manifested.

The extra pieces are so precise that there are online catalogues telling you exactly which ones you get in every set and you think it's machine error? No, they're intentional spares for commonly lost pieces

They're definitely intended. The replacements are always under a certain size, never bigger than a 1x1 brick unless they're a thin piece like a whip.

It’s not a result of the machines. It’s intentional on behalf of Lego to give you extras of smaller pieces in case you lose one. It is consistent in every set, hence why bricklink can list what pieces are extras. You seemed to get everything right except for the actual reason why. (Which you even alluded to)

Every set has exactly one extra for the small pieces. I doubt it's due to weight cuz when you have a piece in different colors (let's say a stud), you might get like 4 white and 10 black ones and you still get 1 extra of each

They are intended. Every set will have an extra of all the small pieces they include

It is definitely intended. If their sorting machines had issues determining weight like that, we’d see a lot more missing small pieces.

In one of the old Chima sets, the gorilla mech, you could literally use the spare parts to make an exact copy of a brick-build gun one of the characters in the set uses, and that thing has like 4-5 pieces that aren't really used anywhere else in the set.

The real reason they pack extra Lego pieces is because just in case you lose a piece, there is a replacement for that piece. Usually it's easier to lose smaller pieces than the larger pieces, which is why you see more smaller pieces than larger pieces.

I always assumed it had something to do with the machines such that it was programed to give an extra of the small prices so in the event of a screw up the set still contained everything you need.

Wrong. Theres at least 1 extra of every piece that sits on 1 stud.

When I was a kid I was always so infuriated by these extra pieces, it's not that I thought I missed an instructions to add them but it's because I know they're extra pieces but can't be added to the build itself. So what I usually do before is I attach them in the build where it wouldn't ruin the symmetry of the build and would still look legit.
