My very first apartment was above a storefront in an upscale suburb. For special occasions I would call the butcher at the privately-owned neighborhood grocery store and ask him to set aside something nice (eg, filet, chops, tenderloin, etc) for me to pick up on the way home from work. He would pick out the most gorgeous and flavorful cuts of meat for me! Also, I remember a funny story about the fishmonger at another grocery. They had swordfish on sale; I walked up to the counter and asked for a couple of swordfish steaks. He said, "You don't want swordfish." It didn't register at first; I was about to say, "What do you mean, I don't want swordfish?!?" Then I realized: "Ohhhh..." The swordfish had gone or was about to go bad -- probably why it was on sale. I grinned and said, "So, what DO I want?" He recommended some nice whitefish that turned out to be very tasty! 🐟🥰

Decades ago, Baskin-Robbins would give customers dry ice to pack ice cream to bring home. Once, I played a prank on my Mom. I knew that dry ice will not turn into liquid, then gas, but from solid to gas. Mom was kneeling down in the kitchen. I had an idea. I got an empty, used margarine cup, and I put dry ice inside, and placed it on the floor behind her. I walked in front of her. The cup popped and Mom said, "Oh, John."
