I use a foundation row instead of chain and that helps me a lot. So much easier than crocheting in a chain. Plus it stretches easier than a chain start.

I am new to Tunisia but I do crochet all the time...I went up 2 sizes and it is still curling

It curls on the bottom, and if you're using acrylic yarn, you don't block, so the curl will stay unless you add a crochet border all around.
