This breaks my heart. My great-grandmother sang it when my great-grandpa was in England in WW2. My grandma use to sing this for me as a child when my dad sent to Iran. Now my husband a first responder in a rough area and I sing it to myself when he's on a nasty call. It's sung in my family to pray loved ones will come home from danger.

War spawns a great deal of beautifully heart-felt music. I have searched from the American Revolutionary War right thru modern times in order to build a play list for holidays like Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and July 4.
This is an older song, but appropriate.
My favorite? Band of Brothers them song has amazing words.
But there is a huge collection from WWI that stir my soul.

I deeply admire your gift This is a beautiful song, I am a First Nations Elder woman in Australia of Irish descent and I learnt this song at a folk festival over 40 years ago. Wow!! I absolutely love this song. When I was younger my Dad would take me to practice with an Irish folk band. Even though he left soon after and the band didn’t last I still sing this song. Beautiful rendition!!
