I wish I was taught this growing up! I've experienced my silence being taken as be passive, being scared to speak up, and being snotty! I've also experienced people not listening even when they ask your feedback and I just didn't bother to talk, because everyone is fighting for the chance to blabbermouth and not really listening to each other!

Unfortunately for me, I've been in situations where if I didn't somewhat interrupt to weight in on the topic at hand, the others involved would somehow move to a different subject. At that point, it would seem awkward to go back to put my two cents in on the other subject!

Two points I dont agree with, and it doesnt gain respect, learning assertive techniques to vocalise boundaries, gains respect!
1. In relation to interruptions by the other person and
2. Keeping silent to allow the other person to speak

This is abused by certain types of people who have always made a beeline for me for many years and quite frankly, have drained the life force from me, due to their overbearing nature and their expectation of me to accommodate them. There are techniques to deal with this rudeness. Some people will drain you and refuse to give you the opportunity to speak, its all about them. Then when they have finished, they then say "I have to go now" as if its you that has held them Then you have the other people who are constantly looking out for you, to corner you, as they cant wait to brag and drain you with their crap. . . . .while you are being polite and asking them how they and their family, they dont even use your name when addressing you or ask how you are. . . . .. . . . . I no longer stop and give them time. Its hello, goodbye and continue walking. . . . .. . .
