I think this reduces fear of death because it gives people the impression that they will still exist after death. This is the opposite of reducing the fear of death, though, because they think they will still be "alive" in some sense of the word. If you did the same experiment but after a few seconds leaving your body you just black out and sit there in darkness with no sensation, I'm not sure people would say this reduced their fear of death.
