Striving to be better than the person you were yesterday is universal to life, and life is surly not a game to "play".  I'd say a great majority of kids in film school unfortunately don't see it as such.  Great interview!

I'm a young writer and it's hard finding others who are as logic oriented as I am when it comes to creative work. I used to think my best friends were holding me back, until I realized that it was a reflection of my skills and character if I failed to find some good in them. So I slowly introduced them to craft elements by showing them how I build and edit stories. I would fake epiphanies about inspiration being built on unconscious understanding, even though I've known this for years. I basically manipulate and lie to them all in order to act as a teacher and sneak past their resistance to the work part of art.
