Where Are They Now? The Monaco Team That Reached The 2017 UCL Semis

AS Monaco had such an incredible 2016-17 season. They won the league, got to the final of the Coupe de la Ligue, semi-final of the Coupe de France, and also got to the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League. They were easily one of the best teams in Europe that season. And it was extra-impressive because this was a team who had just gained promotion back to Ligue 1 4 years prior, and they also didn’t spend a lot on players.

Anyway, today, we want to look at the players who made that run happen. This is the Monaco team that reached the 2017 Champions League semi-final and where they are now.

Let’s start from the captain of that squad – Radamel Falcao. Already in his 30s then, Falcao was one of the most experienced players in that team. After what he was able to achieve with that young Monaco side, he moved to Galatasaray in 2019, and then in 2021, he moved to Rayo Vallecano where he currently plays.

And then the Golden Boy, Kylian Mbappe, who only just turned 18 during that season, was easily one of Monaco’s best players. Without him, that run would not have happened. Anyone who saw the kid play instantly knew he was going to be a megastar, so it was no surprise that after that season, PSG came for him, first taking him on loan and then buying him permanently the following year.

What a beautiful team that 2017 Monaco was, it's good to see that quite a number of the players have moved to big clubs and flourished. Can you make a video on Ajax's 2019 team

Monaco from being the Ligue 1 champions and UCL semifinalist in 2017 to only narrowly escaped the relegation in 2019 is such a quick decline.
Lyon had the similar story as well, but in the worst possible. They went from having seven Ligue 1 titles in a row and even playing in 2 Champions League semifinal, the most recent being 2020, to now last in Ligue 1 this season.

Hey Goal90, you could do a video of the players who won the 3-peat with Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid from 2016-2018 and the Bayern München team the won the European treble in 2013.

That team was loaded. The ligue 1 is basically farming talents for other leagues.

now imagine if teams like monaco and ajax did not sell their players, they would have dorminated europe rather than the same teams that have always been there. I know its good that players get to move bigger clubs but that sometimes sacrifices the potential of there current clubs from becoming bigger and being competitive.

How comes among all EPL team snatching a Monaco player, Chelsea got the worst one? Liv got Fabinho, City got Bernado, but Chel only had Bakayoko?😢
