Hydrogeophysical measurements are useful to investigate the interaction between structural heterogeneity of vadose zone properties and water flow and transport processes. Structural characterization will be illustrated using results of a 1 km2 survey with electromagnetic induction measurements within the context of precision agriculture. Vadose zone processes can be investigated using time-lapse geophysical measurements. Although it is attractive to integrate such time-lapse measurements of varying origin, scale, and uncertainty into hydrological models, this is a far from straightforward task. After an introduction of the challenges of such model-data integration, the possibilities and limitations of coupled inversion approaches will be discussed. The presentation will end with my personal opinion on future research needs for hydrogeophysics.
