The Asiatic lion (formerly known as Panthera leo persica), also known as the Indian lion or Persian Lion is a lion subspecies that what we know, lives as a single population in Gujarat, India.
It is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List because of its small population size. As of June 2020, lion population was estimated at 674 individuals.
First described as Felis leo persicus, its historical range included eastern Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Mesopotamia, and from east of the Indus River in the former Sind Province to Bengal and Narmada River in Central India.
The type specimen of the Asiatic lion was first described from Persia in 1826. It also occurred in Arabia, Palestine, Mesopotamia (Iraq) and Baluchistan (Pakistan).
Lions from Greece and Asia Minor tended not to have abdominal or lateral manes, or ulnar hair. Those from the Syrian region and Arabian Peninsula tended to be maneless, similar to their Egyptian relatives.
In contrast, depictions of lions from the Mesopotamian Plain, such as in Nineveh, show that they possessed underbelly hair.
Apart from captive lions in temperate climates, the only other lions that were noted to have underbelly hair were Barbary and Cape lions.
By the turn of the century, the Gir Forest held the only Asiatic lion population in India, which was protected by the Nawab of Junagarh in his private hunting grounds.
The current population of all 700 or so Asiatic lions is derived from that 12-20 left in wild at the turn of the 19th century after very strict measures of conservation and protection.

The larger Extinct European Lions are found in Greece, Balkan Countries and Western Turkey, while surviving smaller Asiatic Lions are found in India's Gir Forest in Gujarat, and even in the Historical Ranges like Arabia, Eastern Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Palestine, Mesopotamia, and from East of the Indus River in the former Sind Province to Bengal and Narmada River in Central India.

And all of us think, we are the smartest creatures created by the gods..I am sure he/she up there must be sad creating us.
The entire Asia had lions once and almost the whole of India, and today we just have them in Gir, and that too because of the nawab. Nawab of Junagadh was an animal lover to the core. He declared holidays on death of his dogs, he also carried out the wedding of his dogs and distributed sweets..It sounds funny but come what may, this craziness of his, made it possible for us and future generations to admire this beautiful cat created by the same god who created us unfortunately..

I thought I was the only one who noticed captive asiatic lion males have a larger mane that looks like a barbary lion rather than wild asiatic lions in india

In 1951 a lion was killed in south Iraq by the Iraqi police in Al Kote province
Probably it came from the mountains between Iraq and Iran
