When I was a kid, loooong ago, we covered oranges with cloves. Just press them in with the stem side until orange is completely covered. Smelled so good and as the orange dried out the smell got stronger. Place them in some mesh scraps and tie with a ribbon scraps. I'm only guessing but i think the cloves kept them from rotting because ours only dried out
