A fun video, but not entirely accurate. The backstory on the woman pretending to give birth to rabbits is true, but this is, in fact, not what spawned the rabbit from a top hat phenomena. Retired now, I was a professional magician for over 50 years, and I still write regularly for online and print magic publications. In truth, it is extremely rare to find a magician pulling a rabbit from a hat today. Most magicians are conscientious enough to leave the poor animals out of their acts, but when they are made to magically appear, rarely is the production done from a hat. Most performers are, to begin, smart enough to know that this is the 21st Century. It has been a very, very long time since gentlemen wore top hats. Those who wear them in their acts today are either amateur hacks, or those who use the hat for a clown-like comical effect. Some period performers wear them, but very few. The rabbit from top hat trick is, in short, not really a staple in the acts of professional performers, and hasn’t been in well over a century. When magicians actually did produce rabbits from hats, the hats were often borrowed from gentlemen in the audience, a fact that made the trick all the more impressive. When was the last time you attended an event where anyone wore an opera hat?
