Can you tell me when does "car detailing" became popular to the mainstream ?

I don't exactly know when "washing with sponge and cloth damage the paint surface" became mainstream too.

and I can't seem to recall the day when "microfiber cloth" became popular as the best cloth.

it's hard to track time these days. back then I remember detailing services were only for sport car owners when I watched the TV, but somehow it became popular even for average car owners.

do you remember the boom era that makes car detailing popular ?

sorry for long question, I'm simply curious about the day when "washing with sponge" considered old and snowy pressure washer+microfiber+detailing takes over.

May I ask, how much did you charge for this? I currently charge £60 for a full exterior wash (wheels & roof) and a basic interior clean (Vac/Wipe/Glass) I hate doing them and I’m considering just refusing any future enquiries unless I increase the price.
