"How much resolution is needed for accurate heat transport in turbulent convection? A summary of the main results of M7 phase 2" by Dr. Roland Welter (Universität Hamburg)

Abstract:

During phase 2, the M7 group has been investigating aspects of turbulence in geophysical flows. A major focus has been on the heat transport induced by turbulent convection, often modeled via parameterizations in large climate models. In this talk, I'll summarize some of our main results and findings regarding energetically consistent heat transport in the rotating Boussinesq-Oberbeck model, a paradigmatic model capturing many features of dry, non-hydrostatic atmospheric convection.
