The buzzer goes. The race is on. No breaks. No pauses. No half-times. The finish is 2000m away.

I row at home and used to row on a team and in a single scull. I was no good at 5.7 inches. But rowing is a wonderful sport. It is rhythmic and in many ways quiet. I remember. Sunday morning on the lake of Zurich. Pure glass, no waves from other boats yet. Just me, my breath and the noise of the oars and the water. Awesome. Miss it.

This will certainly attract many new people to the sport…

Like no other sport, you have to maintain your precision while going deep into the pain of all out exertion.

I hate this stigma that rowing = pain or that any sport requires tremendous suffering to succeed and only people with superhuman willpower are capable or worthy of competing.

It's what kept me away from sports and unathletic until my 30s when I was lucky enough to find some amazing coaches who taught me different ways of thinking.

I discovered rowing last year and thanks to those coaches, wasn't scared to try it despite the reputation. I love it and I've competed a few times already though I'm just middle of the pack and have a lot more to learn. But I'm confident pain isn't what will help me win.
